Interior Designer Cheryl Kling knew the owners wanted to warm up the room and create an environment where both family and guest could stay awhile. Project Leader: Cheryl Kling, Collaborate Design Studio, Deerfield, IL Project Description: Family-room remodel in Highland Park, IL Entry Category:Singular Space Design StatementIn every home there’s always one room delegated to odds and ends. In the case of an elegant home in Highland Park, it was the family room. Interior Designer Cheryl Kling knew the owners wanted to warm up the room and create an environment where both family and guest could stay awhile. It needed to incorporate plenty of comfortable seating, space for books, a flat-screen TV and furnishings that would hold up to the daily assaults of three active kids. The family’s need for comfortable seating was met with two large overstuffed sofas. Dressed in durable chenille and topped with pillows, the sofas take on a rich custom look with the addition of brown velvet piping. Interest was added to the arrangement with a pair of distinctly different reading chairs- one in the leather and velvet and the other in earth-toned stripes-while side tables and accessories in stone, rattan and distressed wood add tone and texture to the mix. Design Firm Background:Cheryl Kling moved to the Chicago area five years ago from Ohio, where she designed hundreds of retail environments for Sterling, Inc., the $2 billion parent company of Kay Jewelers. Now after more than 20 years working for others, Kling joined four other partners to establish her own residential and commercial design firm in Deerfield. “We all have different backgrounds,” she says, “so the name Collaborate Design really reflects what we do.” Design & Architecture Magazine Author: Pauline Tingas October 2004
